Teacher Pyotr Mikhailovich teaches at a school opened by a local landowner on his estate. The teacher goes with the children to the fields and forests, to the river, delves into their interests and needs, helps as much as he can. Pyotr Mikhailovich talks with the children about nature, about Russia, about beauty and art. He never tires of admiring the intelligence, talents, and greedy thirst for knowledge of the peasant children. He shares all his thoughts, ideas, and questions with L. N. Tolstoy in letters that are heard throughout the film.
